Well,
I pre-ordered it on my CC (Naughty) and got access to the beta, besides being very buggy i am really enjoying the game, the space battles are kinda awesome and the ground combat is not too bad.
The game is level based but they claim there is no XP. instead you get skill points when you complete missions or kill some enemies, witch you have to spend to increase in ranks.
For example, you start a a Ensign, but quickly go up to your next rank after the introduction missions. After that you have 9grades to progress through in that rank before you get to the next rank. To get promoted once you have reached the grades you also need to complete certain things like spending 6000 skill points. Witch is a shame as i was trying to save them!
You get 3 Bridge officers to start with, they all have certain abilities for space and land combat and join you on your away team. Open completing mission you also get starfleet merits and officer points. The merits can be used at Spacedock to requisition new officers or train new skills to your current officers. The officer points are to increase the skill levels of your officers.
Once you have been promoted you can promote your bridge officers to allow them to learn the next skill in the chain, but you can only promote your officers to a rank below yours.
There are typically 3 types of ships. Cruiser, Escort and Science.
Cruiser - Large, good weapons and shields but slow to manoeuvre due to size.
Escorts - Small quick with below average shields but huge array of weapons to deal ALOT of damage in a short time.
Science - Very good shields, and high powered sensors allowing you to natively target subsystems and find weak spots in your enemies.
In the beta my first ship upgrade was free so i got a cruiser, then i bought a Escort and LOVE it.. The ingame currency is Energy witch can be earnt in many ways.
The story behind the game is the Klingons and Federation are at war, so obviously it takes alot of aspects form other games. I have noticed a bit from WoW, they have arena type PvP where you battle on land or space over territory or resources. There is also a persistence resetting instance in the sector you start in called Starbase 24, it is a Klingon invasion and the mission is to drive the Klingons back out the system via space combat, then beam down to the starbase and drive out the boarding parties. Once these missions are complete you get a timer of about 5mins before the whole instance resets and you can do it all over again. This i found was very good for picking up items to sell or use.
There is also smaller instances dotted around labelled as enemy contacts, and if you engage them you have to defeat 8 enemy squads, before the instance will count down and reset again.
All in all i am really loving the game, but there are a few annoying bugs and a little lag every so often. But i must say for only being re-developed by Cryptic for just over a year it is a very good game, considering they have had to accommodate for Space and land combat, areas and play style.
The Graphics are very nice, and all ships you acquire in the game are customisable, for instance my Cruiser has the Nacelles of a Vesper class, the Hull of the Excalibur and the saucer of the Excalibur, in texture 4a with a dark red tint on the underside.
I think i will give this a 8/10.0 based on current game state, but hope most of the bugs get worked out before release date witch is aimed for 5th Feb
