Are crap.

Buy a decent one yourself, it's totally worth it;

Code: Select all
Line Speed, Router:           Download,       Upload

20mb, Virgin Router:          1245.0 kB/s     90.9 kB/s
20mb, Old Linksys:            1755.8 kB/s     91.9 kB/s
20mb, New Netgear:            2249.3 kB/s     91.6 kB/s
50mb, New Netgear:            5360.4 kB/s     203.0 kB/s

I'm using a free Virgin Media router - came with my 10MB Internet package - so getting a better router could increase my speed too?

Yeah - it could definitely help. Depends if your current router is struggling to handle your internet activity. I have a lot of torrent active usually, so the number of incoming/outgoing connections can be very high. The old router simply couldn't handle this.

The problem I have been having for the last few months is that when I have torrents active, I cant do anything else... apart from offline programs.
Internet pages wont load, any online games will lose connection to the server, and wont allow me to log back in. I have torrent bandwidth set to medium, as default, and I usually only have 1-2 torrents active. Its a pain, as I have to leave it on overnight to upload/download.

It never used to do this before, so based on what you said, I think a new router to replace this virgin one is a good idea :)

That's exactly what I had - it's the number of simultaneous connections that the router can't handle. You might be able to change the settings for that in your torrent client. (E.g. the number of peers you connect to / connect to you)

It's annoying as hell as your internet seemingly locks up constantly, but it's literally just your router not being able to handle additional connections :(
