[b:668522ef86][u:668522ef86]Why Voicechat?[/u:668522ef86][/b:668522ef86]
During end-game encounters, it becomes increasingly harder to sit down and type long explanations to people for pulls. Teamwork and strategy is much quicker sorted when everybody can hear each other. It saves a lot of time.
For normal play, instead of sitting typing and chatting to people, which disrupts your gameplay and really reduces the amount of things you get done, you can instead simply talk while you continue questing or grinding at the same time. I have been using voicechat in guilds and games for many years now and would not know what to do without it.
Even though we will not make voicechat mandatory during normal play, during end-game instances I personally will not group with you unless you come on ventrilo. It just aint worth typing full length strategies at every pull. If you don't want to talk or are shy, you can still connect and listen.
[b:668522ef86][u:668522ef86]How to Connect to Ventrilo[/u:668522ef86][/b:668522ef86]:
[b:668522ef86]Step One[/b:668522ef86]:
Download the Ventrilo Client. (Scroll down, file is attached to this post.)
[b:668522ef86]Step Two[/b:668522ef86]:
Install Ventrilo by executing the exe file you downloaded in Step One. Once installed, run it.
[b:668522ef86]Step Three[/b:668522ef86]:
User Name: This is the name you will display on the server. Most people use their in-game name so they are easily identified by their guild. To do this you need to click the [b:668522ef86]->[/b:668522ef86] button to the right of "User Name". Click New, and type the name you want to use. Once you have done this, you can set a Phonetic. A phonetic is played when a user connects to the server so everyone knows who has connected. If you leave this box blank, the voice software attempts to pronounce your username 'as is' which sometimes leads to rather odd pronounciations. The other 2 boxes are not needed at all, and you can leave them blank.
[b:668522ef86]Step Four[/b:668522ef86]:
Connecting to the NNM Server:
Again click the [b:668522ef86]->[/b:668522ef86] button, this time next to "Server". Click New. In the Name box put the name you want the server to be known by for easy server switching. (I use NNM) Now click OK.
The NNM Server details are at the start of this post - use them to fill in IP, Port and Password.
Leave default channel blank, this has already been set server-side.
Once done, click OK.
You are now done with the initial setup, from now on you can connect very easily by selecting the User Name and Server you would like to use and then pressing Connect.
[b:668522ef86]Other Things[/b:668522ef86]:
One of the first things you might want to do is set a so called "Push-To-Talk" Hotkey. If you do not use this, please be aware everyone on the server can hear EVERYTHING you do or say, or what is said behind you if they are fairly loud. This can lead to annoyance from your fellow users, so it is best using a Push-To-Talk key unless you are extremely familiar with Ventrilo and know what you are doing. (In all cases a headset is mandatory if you do not use a hotkey.)
Goto "Setup" and in the first tab, "Voice", you will fine "Use Push-To-Talk Hotkey".
Tick the box in front of this, and at "Hotkey" a bit further below, select the key you would like to use.
Press OK - you are done. You now have to press and hold the key you chose to speak on the server, when you don't hold this key nobody will hear you so you can safely swear, sing or whatever you do in your spare time.
Another thing to do, at the same tab in Setup is ensure the amplifiers Outbound and Inbound are set at acceptable levels for your guild mates. Ask people if you come through too quiet or too loud, so that you can set your outbound to a comfortable level for other people. If you find everybody else too quiet or loud, play with your Inbound settings.
That's pretty much it - happy chatting!
